Turnout 2024:
Interesting. From Paul Campos:
------
"With final numbers now in, itâs possible to calculate fairly precisely how many Americans bothered to vote in the 2024 election, and how many couldnât vote for one reason or another.
If we imagine a room with 100 people in it who reflect the population as a whole:
22 of them couldnât vote because they were too young.
Six of them couldnât vote because they werenât citizens.
One couldnât vote because of a felony conviction.
So note that nearly 30% of the residents of the US at the moment arenât even eligible to vote.
Of those who were eligible to vote, only 63.88% did so. This means that only 45.8% of the population voted.
Going back to our white room with black curtains:
26 out of 100 people in it didnât vote even though they could have.
22 out of 100 people voted for Kamala Harris.
23 out of 100 voted for Donald Trump.
1 person voted for somebody other than Harris or Trump for president.
1 person voted but didnât vote for president.
Going back to the VOTER ELIGIBLE POPULATION (note that 21 million American adults arenât eligible to vote), some particularly bad turnout numbers as a percentage of the voter eligible population in those states:
West Virginia: 55.5%
Texas: 56.6%
Oklahoma: 53.3%
New York: 57.9%
Mississippi: 57.5^
Hawaii: 50.3%
Arkansas: 53.5%
Some relatively good states:
Colorado: 73.1%. (All-mail voting)
Maine: 74.2%
Michigan: 74.6%
Minnesota: 76.4%
New Hampshire: 74.1%
Pennsylvania: 71.4%
Wisconsin: 76.9%
Note that itâs gotten FAR easier to vote in the USA over the last decade or so, and especially post-pandemic. All but three states now have some combination of no-excuse absentee voting by mail, and/or in person early voting. Almost no one is subjected involuntarily to the ridiculous traditional system, where you were forced to stand in line for hours on Election Day itself.
Basically we have a deeply unengaged public, in which nearly two out of five adults who are eligible to vote canât even be bothered to do so (closer to one out of every two in several states, including some big ones), and in which a huge percentage of those who do vote are barely paying attention to what theyâre doing, since they know as much about politics as I know about Olivia Rodrigo (Ironically my theory which is mine has led me to learn enough things about Ariana Grande that my relative ignorance regarding her is no longer a fair representative of the yet more impressive ignorance of our crucial swing voters regarding politics, who just made Donald Trump president again)."'

What Makes an Ethnic Villain "Ethnic" or "Villainous?" How Do You Offset it?
anonymous asked:
Hello WWC! I have a question about the antagonist of my story. She is (currently) Japanese, and I want to make sure Iâm writing her in a way that doesnât associates [sic] her being Asian with being villainous. The story is set in modern day USA, this character is effectively immortal. She was a samurai who lost loved ones due to failure in combat, and this becomes her character[sic] motivation (portrayed sympathetically to the audience). This story explores many different time periods and how women have shown valor throughout history. The age of the samurai (and the real and legendary female warriors from it) have interested me the most, which is why I want her to be from this period. The outfit she wears while fighting is based on samurai armor, and she wears modern and traditional Japanese fashion depending on the occasion. She acts pretty similar to modern day people, though more cynical and obsessed with her loss. Sheâs been able to adapt with the times but still highly values and cherishes her past. She is the only Asian main character, but I plan to make a supportive Japanese side character. Sheâs a history teacher who knows about the villain and gives the protagonists information to help them, but isnât involved in the main plot otherwise. Are the way Iâm writing this villain and the inclusion of a non-antagonist Japanese character enough to prevent a harmful reading of the story, or is there more I should do?
Why Does Your Villain Exist?
This makes me feel old because David Anders plays a villain with this kind of backstory in the series Heroes starring Masi Oka.Â
I think you want to think about what you mean when you say:Â
Villainous (In what way? To whom? To what end?)
Harmful (What tropes, narratives and implications are present?)
Iâm relatively infamous in the mod circle for not caring too much about dimensions of âharmâ. The concept is relative and varies widely between people and cultures. I donât see much value in framing motivations around âWhat is less harmful?â I think for me, what matters more is:Â
âWhat is more true?âÂ
âAre characteristics viewed as intrinsic to background, or the product of experiences and personal autonomy?â
âWill your portrayal resonate with a large audience?â
âWhat will resonate with the members of the audience who share the backgrounds your characters have?âÂ
This post offers additional questions you could ask yourself instead of âis this okay/not okay/harmful.âÂ
You could write a story where your antagonist is sly, sadistic, violent and cold-blooded. It may not be an interpretation that will make many Japanese from combat backgrounds feel seen or heard, but itâs not without precedent. These tropes have been weaponized against people of Japanese descent (Like Nikkei Japanese interned during World War II), but Japan also brutalized a good chunk of Asia during World War II. See Hergeâs Tintin and The Blue Lotus for an example of a comic that accurately showcases the brutality of Japanâs colonization of Manchuria, but also is racist in terms of how Japanese characters are portrayed (CW: genocide, war, imperialism, racism).
You could also write a story where your characterâs grief gives way to despair, and fuels their combat such that they are seen as calculating, frigid and deeply driven by revenge/ violence. This might make sense. Itâs also been done to death for Japanese female warriors, though (See âLady Snowbloodâ by Kazuo Koike and Kazuo Kamimura here, CW: sexual assault, violence, murder and a host of other dark things youâd expect in a revenge story).Â
You could further write a story where your antagonist is not necessarily villainous, but the perceived harm comes from fetishizing/ exoticizing elements in how her appearance is presented or how she is sexualized, which is a common problem for Japanese female characters.Â
My vote always goes to the most interesting story or character. I donât see any benefit to writing from a defensive position. This is where I'll point out that, culturally, I can't picture a Japanese character viewing immortality as anything other than a curse. Many cultures in Japan are largely defined by transience and the understanding that many things naturally decay, die, and change form.
There are a lot of ways you could conceivably cause harm, but Iâd rather hear about what the point of this character is given the dilemma of their position.Â
What is her purpose for the plot?Â
How is she designed to make the reader feel?Â
What literary devices are relevant to her portrayal?
(Arbitrarily, you can always add more than 1 extra Japanese character. I think you might put less pressure on yourself with this characterâs portrayal if you have more Japanese characters to practice with in general.)Â
- Marika.Â
When Off-Setting: Aim for Average
Seconding the above with regards to this villainessâs story and your motivations for this character, but regardless of her story I think itâs also important to look specifically at how the Japanese teacher character provides contrast.Â
I agree with the choice to make her a regular person and not a superhero. Otherwise, your one Asian character is aggressively Asian-themed in a stereotypical Cool Japan way (particularly if her villain suit is samurai-themed & she wears wafu clothing every so often). Adding a chill person who happens to be Japanese and doesnât have some kind of ninja or kitsune motif will be a breath of fresh air (well, more like a sigh of relief) for Japanese readers.Â
A note on characterizationâwhile our standard advice for âoffsetâ characters is to give your offset character the opposite of the personality trait youâre trying to balance, in this case you might want to avoid opposites. You have a villainess who is a cold, tough âdonât need no manâ type. Making the teacher mild-mannered, helpful, and accomodating would balance out the villainessâs traits, but youâll end up swinging to the other side of the pendulum towards the Submissive Asian stereotype depending on execution. If avoiding stereotypes is a concern, I suggest picking something outside of that spectrum of gentleness to violence and making her really boring or really weird or really nerdy or a jock gym teacher orâŠsomething. Youâre the author.
Similarly, while the villainess is very traditionally Japanese in her motifs and backstory, donât make the teacher go aggressively in either directionâgive her a nice balance of modern vs. traditional, Japanese vs. Western sensibilities as far as her looks, dress, interests, values, etc. Because at the end of the day, thatâs most modern Japanese people.Â
Sometimes, the most difficult representation of a character of color is making a character who is really average, typical, modern, and boring.Â

Billy Hargrove astrology chart analysis

Though I could be wrong about the time, the aspects are pretty much the closest Iâm gonna get (Unless somehow Dacre or the Duffers have released the information of Billyâs birth time and I just donât know. I punched in 'March 29, 1967 11:06 AM San Diego USA' my fellow astrology baddies do what you will with this information Either way the main planets SHOULD stay the same but his houses might be different BUT weâre proceeding with what we have!).
Now, mind you I haven't done this in a while, I'm SUPERRR outta practice so to my fellow astrology baddies if I miss anything I'm so sorry đ.
Alr lets get into it, same as the readings I did for Dallas and Darry I'm gonna go by planet and house and basically explain what it all means.
Sun in Aries (in 10th house) - okay so this is so interesting because even prior to me calculating his chart, I always knew Billy was some sort of fire sign, I mean, LOOK AT HIM??? Like HE'S a fiery little cracker (hahaha cracker... I'm sorry im jk I love u B).
But anyways the sun in 10th house is really interesting, I found a post on here that really explained in depth that aspect and how it affects the natal person (Post here) Basically, people with this placement crave recognition, they stand out with confidence and charisma that often draws attention towards them without fail (we see this the second he arrives at Hawkins, he draws attention towards himself immediately). They naturally gravitate toward leadership roles, even if they didn't ask for it (everyone gravitated towards him and put him on the pedestal of being the "King" and dethroning Steve from the social hierarchy). Their drive for validation stems from fragile self-esteem, leading to feelings of underappreciation despite their efforts. Failures can be deeply personal, like they take failure personally and it affects them greatly, but their ambition and resilience pushes them to rise again, embracing challenges as part of the path to success (started working full time the second he graduated so he could work towards leaving his abusive father).
But back to his sun though, Aries is so interesting because that's so accurate???? Like he's intense, he's passionate. He's very straight forward and will say what he has to say with his chest. People tend to follow him around where he goes, Aries are leaders. They can be spontaneous and impulsive. Stubborn but also a bit reckless. These people are your typical "act before think" people, but like who doesn't love a little chaos đ€Ș. They're ruled under Mars so this sign is all about action and getting shit done. They'll talk their shit and rock your shit, so messing with them isn't really a good idea. But if an Aries likes you they can be a lot of fun. They're very energetic and active people. You'll be anything but bored with them.
now onto his cutesy little moon
scorpio moons are have my heart because they're so sensitive and emotional, that often it's overwhelming even for them let alone an outside person.
People with Scorpio moons often have traumatic childhoods especially his being in 5th house, so probably exposed to big dramatic fights, or the conflict or circumstances were very grand and outrageous (bro kinda witnessed his mom get beaten by Neil and in turn gets beat himself now that he's older). At the same time these are very strong and enduring individuals. Because they tend to always think about the worst possible scenario, have a very cynical and distrusting view on the world. But at the same time, let's not forget, they are water signs, so that sensitivity will always be there, deep down this sign is scared of being alone. There will always be a part of them that will crave intimacy, like true, deep, raw (lol) intimacy. However because of this deep desire, these people can also often be a little.... delulu per say. Like obviously once you've lost a scorpio moons respect they will immediately cut you out like literally, they will treat you like your dead. But Scorpio being the sister sign of Taurus and being a fixed sign, it would take a lot for a scorpio moon to leave like they will put up with A LOT, which is why they often can get taken advantage of in relationships (:/// ). So yea scorpio moons need to be protected and wrapped up in a blanket with some hot coco and be kissed on the forehead.
Moving onto his Mercury (smiles in mercurian dominant myself)
I find this so interesting because on one hand pisces mercurials can be really wise and intelligent (being the last and oldest of the zodiac), these people can have an "old soul" type of mentality so I can totally see them being into topics like philosophy, spirituality, creative arts, anything to really boost their imagination. his 9th house boosts this even more since 9th falls under sagittarius which is all about philosophy and teaching. Because of this, often people with this placement are really good writers. (so I totally agree with the head cannon of Billy secretly writing poetry, and being good at playing games like dnd).
This placement often gets mislabeled as "dumb" or "ditsy" but they're not stupid they just process information slower than most people.
These people are also really good liars. Like they're some manipulative lil bitches (we saw how he lied to mrs. wheeler that he was worried about Max when he was actually raging mad.) They'll lie about almost anything. Sometimes they do it to keep peace around people and avoid conflict and to get people to leave them alone. But yea this placement certainly has a silver tongue innit, helps them get away with stuff but it also means they're really good at rizzing people with their words; speaking of...
our boy over here has a Taurus Venus. like first of all, this comes with so many pluses because Venus is right where it belongs. Taurus is ruled by Venus so this planet is right in its home sign. So my boy is a romantic lil bachelor đ. Now his mars kind of makes him a fuckboy (most scorpio and sagittarius mars' are but the difference is is that sags often can't tell the difference between love and lust so they just pursue the person anyway whereas scorpio mars' are just horny fucks with strong game) BUT once he finds someone he wants to be in a relationship with, ouuuu girl he's such a gem.
Taurus Venus's value things like stability, security and comfort. He will very much pamper you. He'd give you the best he humanly possibly could. Taurus's are all about luxury and savouring the physical pleasures of life. He WILL be super affectionate, gifting you things, always touching you right, buying you or cooking you your favourite foods. Taurus's like routine so he will memorize your schedules and routines, coffee orders and all those small things. Although Billy would typically be impatient, he'd take his time pursuing you. Especially with his Scorpio Mars, he'd come in strong and steady .I don't wanna say like a predator stalking his prey cause that's more Scorpio Venus but bro definitely wouldn't back down easy. He won't mind playing the long game if he thinks you're worth it. The main thing here with this placement is their ACTIONS say a lot about their feelings towards their s/o. His Pisces Mercury will soothe you with sweet words, but his Taurus Venus will show you with his generosity and sensualness. He definitely knows how to make his girl happy and will stay loyal for a long time if he's certain about her.
Billy has so many aspects that indicate strong sex appeal and attractiveness, like it's written all over his chart lmfaoo his Venus trines his Pluto, His Venus also sextiles his ascendant.
His eros also trines his mars so he has a very passionate and intense drive, especially in the bedroom. No matter what you are to him, sex with him will always be intense. There's nothing soft about the way he engages in intimacy.
Billy has a cancer rising, for those of you that don't know your rising is in charge of your looks and people's first impressions of you. So cancer risings often have rounder faces, softer features and big eyes (I mean look at him bro, he's so baby girl). They also have curvier bodies (have you seen this man's thighs) shorter limbs too. Cancer rules over the chest so cancer risings can have large chests or big boobs ( he certainly has boobs). Also cancer risings are very pursued after, almost as much as scorpio risings but the difference is that Scorpios are very intimidating so often people don't wanna get past the sexualness of it. But with cancers, people simp over them emotionally too because cancer is considered as the "divine feminine" or "mother" in astrology, so basically people wanna wife them up as well as fuck them (literally his entire fandom). But yeah, anyway, Billy is a pretty boy we all know this, even his chart does đ.
Alright now more about his mars-
Its in the 4th house, which is also another indication of his abusive childhood :/
His is in Scorpio and yes he's a kinky little shit and a great lover in the bedroom, however that's not all that Mars represents in a natal chart. It also represents how a person takes action to something. How they pursue and how they behave and manage their more aggressive and angry side. On one hand, Billy has the potential to be very good at achieving what he wants in life. He's capable of having a really strong mental fortress as scorpio is a very driven and determined sign. Tactical and calculated but also very loyal people. However at the same time, it makes them lowkey control freaks. They're the type of people to always want the last word in an argument and to have control over everything and everyone in almost every situation (though it does make them strategic leaders at the same time, it's kind of annoying). But yeah these people stand on business they will fuck your shit up if necessary because this planet is also in it's home sign, but Scorpio is also ruled by Pluto so it's the darker one of the mars ruled signs. So their anger can be very explosive and dangerous (we saw how he beat Steve to a bloody pulp), so don't piss them off, it takes a lot for them to loose their cool but once they've lost it, it's gone and not coming back.
Last thing I'll talk about is potential career placements he has because we never got to see him thrive and flourish in life because the duffers hate to give us nice things so I'll just tell you what it could've been with his chart
10 house/ MC in Pisces
So this is so cute because this means that he could actually be successful with a writing career, as this placement flourishes in creative careers. So these people are often musicians, actors, writers. They can also be philosophers, and teachers/mentors of some kind (he taught the kids at the Hawkins community pool how to swim). He'd be such an influencer đ I can totally see him being a model for Calvin Klein because he's literally built like a model (this is so possible with his 11th house in Taurus) As well as Leo in his second house, he'd live a very lavish lifestyle if financially stable and would really thrive in a position where he shines in his own spotlight.
Anywayssss that's everything for now, if there's anything else in his chart you guys want me to talk about don't be afraid to inbox me.
I hope you guys enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed writing this <3

Hullo! I was wondering, is there info anywhere on how much a madol/thaumark is worth? Like, do we have any ideas about what a potential rate of exchange is or something like X number of thaumarks is expensive, Z number is cheap?
Hello hello! Thank you for this question! :>
While not explicitly stated anywhere, the original game's "madol" might be based on Japanese yen, while EN's "thaumarks" are likely based on USD!
While not the case at the moment due to the weakened yen, it used to be that 1 yen = 1 cent USD, and thus 100 yen = 1 dollar USD, which is how the currency was updated for EN: take the original price of something and remove the last two digits, and you have your madol-to-thaumark exchange rate!
Here are some examples from in-game:
An interesting result of this rate-exchange is that it was not updated within the game mechanics in the move to EN!

This makes sense as EN players would require far fewer thaumarks for shop purchases and leveling if the exchange rate was obeyed, but it means that EN players are paying $80,000USD for leveling that technically only costs $800USD.
The two zeroes are being removed from dialogue, but kept in tact everywhere else!
This change over from yen to USD resulted in a challenge for Aniplex USA: sometimes characters will say that something costs 1 madol, which is 0.01 thaumarks. As 1 madol = 1 yen (1 cent USD) this is something the original game can do with madols, but EN cannot do with thaumarks.
Aniplex USA's solution? Invent an entirely new form of currency that does not exist in the original game! :> Thus "sorcents" were born!
Interestingly, there have been at least two instances of EN not adhering to its own exchange rate:
The Albert chain that Kalim loans to Lilia is said to be 10,000,000 madol/yen which should be only 100,000 thaumarks/USD, but it was translated literally as "10 million thaumarks," instead.
And in the Prologue the chandelier is 1 billion madol/yen, so it should be only 10 million thaumarks/USD, but for some reason it was translated literally as "1 billion thaumarks," instead. Interesting!
A few more examples of the exchange rate at work:
Jamil haggles for a lamp during Firelit Sky, getting it down from 10,000 madol/yen (100 thaumarks/USD) to 7,000 madol/yen (70 thaumarks/USD).
Ruggie sells 30 cat carvings to Kalim for 60,000 madol/yen (600 thaumarks/USD).
Ruggie asks about a jeweled bracelet valued at 1,000,000 madol/yen (10,000 thaumarks/USD).
Jamil calculates for Grim how two shares of the 5,000,000 madol/yen (50,000 thaumarks/USD) prize for winning the VDC equals 1,420,000 madol/yen (14,200 thaumarks/USD).

The more time passes, the more I feel like I was really born in the wrong era... I dream of simplicity, authentic relationships, of this innocence that we left behind. I do not aspire to perfection, or to the accumulation of material, only to sincere, spontaneous and true exchanges. Deep connections between humans. A world where kindness and empathy would be central values. But today, everything seems calculated, everyone uses and manipulates the other for their interests. People no longer dialogue to try to understand each other, they just want to impose their ideologies. All the current values ââput forward are not mine. Common sense also leaves the minds... I no longer recognize myself in the majority of my peers. Feeling so out of step is abused to the point of wondering if it is not me who is off the mark. In short, I also know that I am not alone in feeling all this and that is what keeps me going in all this ambient mess. But deep down I still have faith in humanity, that is the most important thing, surely not this year otherwise I would know. So if you are reading this message, know that there are others like you who love others, life, people, so let's see you next year. Because we are beautiful people happy New Year 2025

Interest check
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in badges like this one! The plan is to have more variants with other characters (mostly clones), but for now only this one.
It's a badge that you can push in (there is a sponge inside), so you can massage those kenoboobs đ
(keep in mind, that I live in Europe, so if I do end up ordering some and selling them, the shipping could be a bit expensive, based on the calculation about 5-10 usd to USA as a letter)
#star wars#obi wan kenobi#the clone wars#if i do end up getting them i might make some other merch like acryl standees and keychains#also there is plush or leather variant idk which one would be better hm

The Ultimate Guide to Financial Calculators in the USA: Simplify Your Financial Planning
In todayâs fast-paced world, managing finances effectively is crucial for individuals and businesses alike. Whether you are looking to calculate your returns on investment (ROI), determine your simple interest, or figure out your in-hand salary in the USA, financial calculators can simplify complex calculations.
A financial calculator is a digital tool designed to help users compute various financial figures, including loan payments, interest rates, investment returns, and salary deductions. These calculators save time and eliminate errors that may arise from manual calculations. In the USA, financial calculators are widely used by individuals, business owners, and investors to make informed financial decisions.
Why Use a Financial Calculator in the USA?
The financial calculator in the USA is an essential tool for anyone who needs precise and quick calculations for different financial scenarios. Whether you are a student planning your loan repayments, a business owner analyzing investment opportunities, or an employee checking your salary breakdown, a financial calculator can be your best companion.
Here are some popular types of financial calculators that can benefit users in the USA:
1. ROI Calculator in the USA
AÂ Return on Investment (ROI) calculator in the USAÂ helps investors and business owners determine the profitability of an investment. ROI is a critical metric that shows how much return an investment generates relative to its cost. This calculator is useful for:

Comparing different investment opportunities
Making informed financial decisions
By inputting the initial investment amount and expected returns, the ROI calculator provides a percentage that represents the efficiency of the investment.
2. Simple Interest Calculator in the USA
If you are taking a loan or investing in a fixed deposit, a simple interest calculator in the USA can help you determine how much interest you will earn or pay over a specific period. Simple interest is calculated using the formula:
Simple Interest = (Principal Ă Rate Ă Time) / 100
This tool is beneficial for:
Loan borrowers who want to understand their interest payments
Investors looking to estimate their earnings on fixed deposits
Students calculating their education loan repayments
3. US In-Hand Salary Calculator
For employees in the USA, knowing the exact amount they will take home after tax deductions is essential. A US in-hand salary calculator helps break down salary components, including:
Gross salary
Federal and state taxes
Social Security and Medicare deductions
Other allowances and deductions
By entering basic salary details, employees can get an estimate of their net in-hand salary, making financial planning easier.

honestly.... kuvira has irl parallels w putin.
I mean yeah I've compared her to Stalin and WOW IT'S ALMOST LIKE RUSSIA HAS BEEN DOING THE SAME DAMN THING FOR DECADES. Like seriously it's starting to feel like fucking groundhog day man.
And look, I don't want to be the asshole who shames people for liking Kuvira. I like a lot of aspects of Kuvira's character.
She's hot, she's charismaric (mainly due to Zelda Williams but yk) and she's a relatively compelling character. People are allowed to enjoy a villain character without endorsing the shitty stuff those villains do.
But there is a distinction between Kuvira the character and what Kuvira represents/the thinly veiled real life ideologies behind her.
Kuvira as a character is interesting, you know? Fun to talk about. Someone who was abandoned at a young age and proceeded to self sabotage her relationships and became a control freak who fears vulnerability due to that. Pretty standard villain shit. But fun, and there's a little more to her.
Kuvira as a representant of real world ideologies carries much more weight. People catch onto her Nazi imagery, but the Soviet stuff isn't as obvious. A lot of western europeans and Americans, the main demographic of Avatar won't immediately clock those influences behind Kuvira.
To those countries, Soviet occupation of Eastern Bloc countries was just the cold war, the red scare, a looming threat that could cause harm, but was at least not capable of influencing their lives too intimately.
While the countries that were under the power of the Soviet Union still have that memory fresh in their minds. Hell, my mom grew up in the PRL, my uncle was a part of SolidarnoĆÄ. People remember that shit it wasn't that long ago. Reading literature from not that long ago like A Minor Apocalypse or Madame feels surreal. When I read memoirs or just heard stories from my older relatives, I could taste the atmosphere of bleakness, distrust and confusion.
So maybe I'm just more primed to notice how Kuvira's actions play into patterns of Russian aggression. Maybe when Western European and American viewers are more willing to give Kuvira the benefit of the doubt, or see merit in her actions, I'm more willing to look at her through the lenses of the ideologies she represents.
Throughout most of the show, we don't actually see that much of Kuvira as a character. She's more a silent, looming villain in the background and due to her more calculated demeanour, we don't get a lot of insight into her personality until the last two episodes. So maybe it's easier to look at her more as a representant of dangerous ideologies than as a character.
Mind you, I don't think Bryke really thought through the implications of giving Kuvira the aesthetic and ideology they did. Nazis and to a lesser extent, Soviets, have become very much shorthand for "bad guy" in fiction. If they had thought this through, I wanna at least hope that they would have handled Kuvira more carefully.
Because by giving Kuvira a sense of moral ambiguity and the clumsy handling of her character, you have dumbasses ob reddit defending her. I'm genuinely shocked at the amount of Kuvira apologism in the tlok fandom.
But that goes back to the Western Bloc viewers and creators not really being familiar with the history Kuvira embodies. Not fully imagining the perspective of for example the people under her rule. Which is a perspective I am desperate to see, filling out the blanks with the history Kuvira draws from.
Most of B4 is seen through that 'outside perspective' of Korra and Republic City. Not unlike how a huge part of the narrative around the cold war and Ussr is the Cold War and how it affected Western Bloc countries.
Once again, the only characters who are actually part of the Earth Kingdom and have some experience with Kuvira's occupation are the Beifongs. But they are dismissed as biased, irrational, agressive or pushed aside when our heroic USA inserts get the spotilight. The fandom despises Suyin, derides Zaofu for not being the perfect victims. A story we see more and more of nowadays.
Suyin is depicted as "white woman liberalism" depsite being a leader of a community based, anti monarchist city which seems to allow it's citizens to flourish as artists and scientists and also refusing to seize power over a vulnerable country to hand it over to a monarchy she didn't support and then wanting to kill a fascist? But "ooooh Zaofu is culty and Suyin is a bit of a hypocrite" so I guess she's worse then the fucking Hitler Stalin lovechild that threatened to lay seige to her peaceful city.
The Kuvira apologism in the fandom does sometimes give me similar vibes to Putin dickriding from Conservative americans tbh. At least that explains it.
The reason I'm so unsettled by so many people being blind to the ideologies and history Kuvira represents is because that ideology is not dead. It seems like a lot of westerners don't really seem to care about it anymore, but Russia is still commiting a genocide in Ukraine. Hell, it seems like people from countries that aren't close to the conflict kinda forgot that was still a thing. People are fucking dying, homes are being destroyed. And you think Russia will stop at decimating Ukraine? They're already hiring arsonists to cause chaos in Poland, they're not gonna stop.
These ideologies still cause pain and death today. They're not for cheap villains who can be watered down and excused by a sad backstory. And they're certainly not to he excused and supported by edgy fans who somehow didn't realise that the previous show was violently anti fascist.
Love Kuvira as a character, enjoy her, her storylines, her personality. But for the love of God, acknowledge what she represents, who she represents and that it's bad.
Whew that kinda... got a little heavy. I apologise for the rant, I'm just very frustrated. By how Kuvira is woobified and exhonorated hy both fanon and canon, and by current events in the Ukraine and Poland and the rest of the ex-second world countries and the seeming apathy of the rest of the wider world.
Quick note: The terminology in this post may not be fully up to date, since a lot of terms have went out of usage and lost their meaning.
#also interesting that Suyin's husband's name Baatar is mongolian and mongolia had extremely close ties with russia and the eastern bloc#and baatar jr siding with Kuvira the sexy girlboss stalin variant#kuvira#avatar#legend of korra#tlok#the legend of korra#avatar the legend of korra#atlok#lok#anti kuvira#suyin beifong#korra

I never understood the concept of "doing taxes". Taxes are just there and you just pay them, like everytime you buy something it includes a tax you have no other choice but to pay it, what do you have to do?? (I live outside the USA)
Oh fun! I get to explain U.S. taxes!!
(disclaimer: if you're a young adult in America who will have to learn to do taxes soon, please don't take this as a reason to panic. It IS absurd and it is kinda stressful the first time you do it, but you get a handle on it, and filing services like FreeTaxUSA walk you through it and do all the math parts for you. [Though learning the math parts yourself is kinda smart if you want to understand what you're doing.])
(other disclaimer: I might have some details wrong because I'm a random blogger and not an accountant. Accountants don't maul me please.)
So it's true that tax is included when you buy something, but the whole "doing taxes" in America is about income tax.
My experience is with a company that does withholdings (god bless all you freelance workers figuring it all out for yourselves.) Withholdings means my company will estimate how much tax I should owe and take it out of each paycheck to give to the government. So from a $1,000 paycheck, they might withhold $300 to pay taxes with, and gives you the remaining $700.
But that might NOT be right. So in April every American has to go crunch all the numbers and figure out if they paid the right amount :) (chances are the answer is no).
We get a form called a W-2 (god bless, I only have one W-2 because I work just one full time job) which includes *adjust glasses*: employer's name, your info, your federal ID number, your social security number (partially redacted), your total wages, your federal income tax withheld, your social security tax withheld, your medicare tax withheld, your deferrals with things like 401k contributions, tips, dependent care benefits, STATE income tax withheld (my state has a 5% income tax, on top of the federal income tax) AAAAAAND other boxes I won't even bother with.
You feed this into software (like turbotax, which CHARGES you to do this, but I used FreeTaxUSA which had free federal filing and almost-free state filing) - RIGHT, you file federal and state SEPARATELY. And you owe/receive SEPARATE amounts.
America has tax brackets, which means you owe x% of money you make between--actually, lemme get the fucking chart
fucking delightful.
So if you make $50,000, as a single filer, you owe 10% of the first $10,275, then you owe 12% of the next $31,500 (that's the amount between $10,275-$41,775, in the second row), then 22% of the remaining $8,225 (cough and then also state income tax if you have it cough). It's a little bit like filling up a thermometer, and the amount between each tick mark is what you owe x% of.
BUT WAIT. THERE'S DEDUCTIONS.
DEDUCTIONS are where most of the complexity comes from. Because there's like 1,000 random things that can give you a tax break. And there's also the standard deduction of $12,950.
What's the deduction? It's an amount of your income that qualifies as tax-exempt. So for the $50,000-earner, if they go with the standard deduction of $12,950, then only $37,050 of their income is taxable. So FORGET that calculation above, it's now 10% of the first $10,275, and 12% of the remaining $26,775
But if your itemized deduction is higher than your standard deduction, it's in your interest to calculate all your itemized deductions and use those, if they add up to more than $12,950
My itemized deductions were almost higher than the $12,950, between my state income tax contribution, property tax contribution, and mortgage interest payments. Other people might have a fuckton of other things--uh like dependents, business expenses, uh I'm not even sure since I skim past all the ones that don't apply to me.
OH, ALSO, THERE ARE OTHER FORMS YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PROVIDE BEYOND THE W-2. There are 1099-INT forms for interest made on bank accounts, 1099-DIV forms for money made from stock dividends, and others I don't even know about.
And all my knowledge and experiences comes as someone with relatively simple taxes by U.S. standards.
(The state taxes then have their own things and own deductions and whatever. They're usually kinda less complicated than federal, but they're a separate thing you have to file.)
And after you do all that, it figures out how much tax you SHOULD owe, how much you ACTUALLY paid, and tells you the difference that you owe/are owed.
I got back a decent amount of money in 2019 and 2020. 2021 was preeettty much even. 2022 I OWE a lot of money because, fuck it, I dunno.

Perhaps the reason we donât see more labor movies, and havenât for some time, is because itâs in Hollywoodâs best interest (a Hollywood largely owned by multinational corporations if youâre searching for a reason to care) not to encourage accord amongst a workforce currently asking for as little as a 3% share in what is by all accounts (except Hollywoodâs own) is an unprecedented profit surge. In very real ways around issues of diversity and social progress, Hollywood controls the popular narrative and has been found, repeatedly and egregiously, to be not only lacking but dangerously regressive. There is no real diversity in its ruling class, after all, and they are unteachable so long as they have no reason to learn. The only way to get through to corporations â which are not people, no matter what the 14th Amendment allows â that see the work of others as somehow the product of its own hand, is to stop producing until money, and the creative decisions around its deployment, is redistributed to the people actually doing the work.
